As much as I find it exciting to see a huge array of fun toppings when I go out for ice cream or frozen yogurt, there's only one topping that I love the most, that I can't get at any ice cream shop I've ever been to: Chocolate Magic Shell. For die-hard chocolate fans like me, ice cream and frozen yogurt need chocolate, but chocolate chips just seem to become tasteless mixed with all of the frozen stuff and hot fudge is too sweet to do the job of pure, rich chocolate. That's why I was so excited when I realized that a handful of chocolate chips or chopped chocolate, melted and poured onto ice cream/frozen yogurt, hardens into your very own, instant Chocolate Magic Shell. It only takes a minute and it's 100% chocolate, no other ingredients involved. Try it out!

DIY Chocolate Magic Shell
This instant, DIY Chocolate Magic Shell provides an easy and addicting way to add chocolate to your ice cream or frozen yogurt.
Ingredients
- chocolate chips or chopped chocolate (about 1 - 2 heaping tablespoons per bowl of ice cream)*
Instructions
- Place chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl and microwave for 30 seconds. Stir well, even if it seems that the chocolate hasn't melted enough. Microwave for an additional 30 seconds, if needed. Stir until completely smooth.
- Pour melted chocolate onto ice cream or frozen yogurt; it will harden within seconds. The thinner the coating, the easier it will be to crack into with a spoon.**
Notes
*The frozen yogurt pictured was topped with 1 heaping tablespoon of chocolate chips, melted.
**I would suggest making your coating thinner than pictured above for an easy break. For this reason, using a bowl that exposes more surface area of your ice cream/frozen yogurt will let you use an ample amount of DIY Magic Shell without making the coating too thick.

Must try your method! I tried the butter and chocolate method recently but wasn't thrilled with the results.

I haven't tried that, but I considered it. Then I just realized, "What's the point? Might as well just pour some melted chocolate on there and be done with it."

I've actually posted a similar recipe for homemade magic shell, except with 2 ingredients chocolate and coconut oil. I've heard you can make it with butter as well, but never thought about doing just chocolate chips. Do they really harden as fast? I thought I had to use the coconut oil because it is solid even at room temperature and freezes almost instantly.

I've seen that method, but the reason why I took this route is because I didn't (and don't) have any coconut oil on hand. It does harden right away. It's not something you can store in a jar like regular magic shell, but I also sort of like that I can skip the added calories of the other ingredients by just using chocolate.
